On January 1, 2008, the California Air resources Board (CARB) enacted regulations requiring that evaporative emissions from small off-road vehicles (SORE) and their associated fuel systems  be controlled.

On January 1, 2011, the federal Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) enacted similar regulations for non-road spark ignited engines (NRSI).

All generators, small engines, and the associated fuel systems manufactured for sale in all 50 states must be certified by both CARB and the EPA.

Failure to meet these regulations could mean fines from the EPA and/or CARB:

EPA = $37,500 per incidence (40 CFR 1068)

CARB = $10,000 per incidence (HSC 43154)
